Bus ride from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

We purchased our tickets from one of the many tour operators located on the river road, Preah Sisovath.  Cost of each ticket was $8 USD and included water and a whole package of yummy but greasy sweet bread. They picked us up from our hotel and the ride was about 6 hours long.

Our bus ride was smooth and only broke down once and the drivers fixed it pretty fast!  We only had to wait for about 20 minutes.  Good thing there was some shade since it was scorching hot.

Spider Girl with pineapple

We came to a rest stop for a bathroom break and to buy snacks.  There I was standing around, minding my own business when this girl walks up to me and tosses this huge black spider on me!  It lands on my shirt and quickly begins to crawl up towards my neck!  I was freaking out and wanted to scream, but that wouldn’t have been very manly, would it?  Meanwhile it was quite entertaining for her as she giggled and removed the spider, then said, “Don’t worry, it won’t bite.  Do you want to buy some pineapple?”  Well, I thought to myself, if you didn’t remove the spider I probably would have given you my wallet just to remove the monster!  But since you did, I think the last thing I will do is buy some pineapple from YOU!!

A few moments later I heard a woman screaming … yep another victim for this girl and I couldn’t help but chuckle.  Then when we got back on the bus we heard it again!  I was beginning to like her and brake down and buy some pineapple except I didn’t really want the pineapple since she had this white goop on her hands that came out of the tarantula while she was handling it.  In fact, in the photo, you will notice that she has that goop smeared across her shirt.  I just couldn’t help but think that the goop might be on the pineapple too!

Fried giant black spiders anyone?

Lots of delicacies here including fried pet spiders.  I wonder what they taste like?  Not really …

Next stop Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor!

  1. I kinda like the girl with the spider, she maid me laugh. Though I certainly would not appreciate if she threw a spider on me.

  2. I laugh when I think about it now … and there were about 3 girls with spiders and I’m sure they were all doing the same thing! It’s all part of their marketing technique!
