On May 27 we took the bus from the main bus station in Budva, Montenegro to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Taking the bus is highly recommended, as it is a beautiful drive, which goes around the scenic Bay of Kotor. We spent the day of May 28th in Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik is well-known as a tourist destination to Europeans, and although it is beautiful, the prices are exorbitant. For lunches we had to leave the stari grad area and find grocery stores to find something some-what decently priced. The sea-side walled cities in Montenegro were also beautiful, but much easier on our wallet!
Our first evening in Dubrovnik we took a stroll through the stari grad (old town).
On our second day in Dubrovnik we paid for entrance tickets to walk along the top of the city wall.
The old town can get pretty crowded when the cruise boats full of people come ashore. Luckily when we walked around the city wall the cruise boat passengers were getting back on their boats for lunch. The town thins out and is easier to walk though in the evening, once the cruise boats have departed.
We enjoyed walking around on the city wall, but after that there wasn’t much else to do. There are also museums and churches in Dubrovnik, we just didn’t feel like paying any more entrance fees. We sat on a pier and admired the ocean for a while until dinner time.
That evening we had a lovely dinner at one of the restaurants in the stari grad. We met a family from London over dinner and even they thought Dubrovnik was expensive!
If you’re planning an Eastern European itinerary and have to choose between Budva and Dubrovnik, we recommend Budva.
