On our final day at Uncle Tan’s we got a bonus trip- a morning boat safari. I was feeling like sleeping in, rather than getting up at 6am for the safari, but George reminded me that we might see wild Asian elephants, and I would hate to miss that! There is a place up river where villagers regularly see a herd of elephants, but our boats didn’t go far enough up the river, so no elephants to be found. Just some more of the same types of animals we had seen before. We were really hoping to see elephants in the wild, but that’s how wildlife viewing goes, it’s unpredictable.
After breakfast, it was time to pack up and head back to Sepilok to catch our flight to Kota Kinabalu.
Overall, our Kinabatangan River excursion was quite a success! We saw lots of types of wildlife and didn’t mind the accommodations. Some of our favorite sightings were: 8 orang utans, a gibbon with her baby, proboscis monkeys, silver leaf languars, a civet, horn bill birds, a baby crocodile, and monitor lizards! It also helped that we were there with a great group of people! There were no complainers, and we were all in the same boat ;), so it didn’t matter so much that we were a bit stinky by the end.
