A cold coconut with a straw makes a refreshing drink! We learned that inside a young coconut is juice. Coconut milk is actually made out of the white meat of slightly older coconuts. Sam showed us how to use a piece of the the shell to scrape out the meat. Yummy!
Tips for India: After you drink the coconut water, if you stayed near the street vendor, he will probably scrape out the soft flesh for you!
Actually, in Thailand, even when I was at the airport and trying to pick something vegetarian (b/c of my dad) I ended up getting a coconut. That was a meal in itself! There was so much delicious coconut water, and then the coconut flesh was also delicious. No wonder people can survive on those when they get stranded on islands in the middle of nowhere – on TV.
