Zhang Yimou was the director of the amazing Beijing Olympics opening ceremony and when we heard about a show put on by Zhang Yimou in Yangshuo on the Li River with the beautiful karst limestone mountains as the back drop, that was enough reason to visit Yangshuo! Up until this point, Yangshuo had been the highlight of our trip to China and the Liu Sanjie performance just added to the beauty of the the region. The show was spectacular and worth its price of about $30 USD. We had planned all along to see the show, but only purchased our tickets about 1.5 hours before showtime from our hotel and didn’t expect to have good seats, since those were for sale at double the price or higher! When we got to the venue there were thousands of people waiting to get in and as we entered we were each handed a disposable rain poncho. Luckily for us it didn’t rain and our seats were in the 7th row. Basically, the first 4 rows were the more expensive seats and ours was 3 rows behind them. We scored big as we were in the center as well! How we got lucky we don’t know, but even if you were in the nosebleed seats you would have enjoyed the show with the breathtaking scenery and visuals of the artists who are all locals!
Ok, this woman was amazing, and definitely a professional – maybe not a local fisherwoman ;). From beginning to end there are unexpected but breathtaking changes to the visuals. Overall, the show was amazing and should be included in anyone’s itinerary to either Guilin or Yangshuo.
