Uncle Tan’s- Day 1: Night Safari

After dinner it was time for our night boat safari.  As we cruised along the river our guide used a spot light to search for gleaming eyes.  It was difficult to spot wildlife in the dark, and I soon realized that the real show was the stars overhead.  Seeing the stars from the Borneo jungle, with no city lights around, was truly amazing!  I had thought the view of the stars from my parents’ place was impressive, but this was a whole other league.  There were so many more layers deep of stars than I had ever seen before!

I would have been happy to spend the whole boat ride just gazing up at the stars, but we did also find a few critters to observe.

We didn’t know what civets were before.  They look kind of similar to cats and are sometimes referred to as civet cats, but they are not felines.  These are the type of critter that help make the expensive Kopi Luwak coffee, by eating the beans and then defecating ;).

  1. I was going to ask if you were able to try any of the civet poo (kopi luwak) coffee but it would probably be a little too fresh and close to the source. 😉
