Phi Phi Island Viewpoint

It’s easy to find the viewpoint … just not easy to climb!  If you do get lost, just ask any local and they will point you in the right direction.

Stairway leading up to the viewpoint
Stairway leading up to the viewpoint

There is a seemingly endless steep stairway leading up to the first viewpoint.  I started counting the steps part way up which totaled over 320.  Near top of the steps there is a hand rail which you need to hang on to because it gets very steep!  Then just when you think you are done, you need to climb a super steep concrete ramp the rest of the way up to the higher viewpoint.  It was a painful hike, even after we thought we were in shape from our long daily walks :).

There are beautiful flowers and a restaurant at the upper viewpoint.  There is also a restaurant at the lower viewpoint, if you need to stop for refreshments.

During the 2004 tsunami, the waves came crashing in from Tonsai Bay (left) through the other side to Loh Dalam Bay (right) – taking with it most everything in its path.  It is amazing the progress that has transformed the island since… Mostly, over-development!
